🎙️ On the Pod: Empowering Women in Sports Media with The GIST
In conversation with Ellen Hyslop, Co-Founder of The GIST.
A platform we've followed closely since it first came on our radar in 2018. And one that shares some interesting parallels with SportsTechX: both emerged around 2017-18 in what was once considered niche but has now evolved into a mainstream segment of the sports industry. Though it seems women's sports > sports innovation.
✅ Key Takeaways:
The GIST is the first fan-first sports media company for underserved sports fans.
Women engage with both men's and women's sports, often showing higher interest levels than male audiences. And while storytelling in sports is crucial for any audience, it is even more so for female sports fans.
Digital media has transformed women's sports by enabling athletes to control their narratives. And while technological advances have improved media coverage quality, there's still a long way to go.
The emerging generation of female athletes increasingly views sports as viable career paths due to expanding, untapped commercial opportunities. For example: the huge potential of commercialising data analytics for women's sports, related to fantasy sports and betting. These factors, combined with growing visibility, are driving investment momentum.
Women entering the sports industry should view their unique perspectives as assets.
